A NOTE FOR RELATIVES AND FAMILY FRIENDS WHO READ THIS BLOG: My parents rode out the hurricane in Jewett, Texas, about 180 miles inland, then returned to Galveston over the weekend, taking the backroads to avoid the gridlocked freeways. The house was unflooded and undamaged, and the electricity was on. My father hadn't made it to his lab yet when he called me Sunday, but he'd heard it's in good shape as well. So Rita left the Walkers essentially unscathed.
